As a high school student in Wilmington, NC, I had the amazing opportunity to travel with physicians to both the Dominican Republic and Haiti to help provide medical care to the residents. When my husband, Whit, and I moved to Greensboro, NC in 2003, I knew I wanted to get involved in mission work, but I wasn’t sure where or how to get invovled. Remembering the love I had for the people of the Dominican Republic, I traveled to the DR shortly and partnered with Moises Sifren at Casa Pastoral in La Romana. Since that visit in 2008, I have regularly traveled down to La Romana and worked in the bateyes alongside the residents to rebuild houses, schools, latrines and churches.
I am truly in my “happy place” when I am in the DR and in the Summer of 2022, Whit and I had the privilege to adopt Batey Como Quiera near La Romana. This will be a long-term project, but one where we will rebuild the houses and build a hurricane proof school and a church. We want to become a part of this community and immerse ourselves in the lives of these amazing people. The families in these bateyes give so much more to us by their love, perseverance, determination and pride they have for their communities and It is an honor to work alongside of them.
We will be traveleing several times a year to the DR to make this mission a reality. We hope that you can join us or support our mission in other ways.
Sincerely,
Fleming Edwards
